Take Action or Suffer

Civilized Society Has Made Us Fat

In my line of work, I have the privilege of speaking with a lot of people about health and fitness, or the lack thereof.  I have conversed with so many people who have had gym memberships and not seen one once of results.

   I think this is an outrage.  Why pay for a monthly gym membership if it does not work for you?  Would you intentionally buy a car that doesn't run and then continue to make payments on it for 5-years.  I highly doubt it.

   I recently spoke with a middle-aged lady that told me she had a membership at a local gym for years, and then she went on to explain to me that she has not lost any weight, reduced her body fat or gained any lean muscle, during that entire time as well.  Her reason for not seeing any results was the most common and simplest of them all.  I asked her why she was not getting the results she wanted, and she replied...

"I don't know what to do when I go to the gym."

   She went on to explain that each time she goes to the gym, she uses a few of the machines she is familiar with and then gets on the treadmill.  Wow, does that sound familiar or what?

   Now, I have heard those same remarks hundreds of times in the past, and I have to admit it never really sunk in what the people were telling me until recently.  I guess on this particular day my mind was in a state universal clarity and I was able to totally absorb everything around me.

   I spent the rest of the day thinking about what she told me.  It disturbed me deeply as a matter of fact.  This lady had great intentions, and did everything she knew to be right, and through no fault of her own had failed to get any positive results.  So I sat down on the couch, pulled out my pen and paper and started to work this problem out.

First I recapped what she told me.
1.  I go to the gym regularly.
2.  I eat well and stay away from "bad" foods.
3.  I use the machines I am familiar with.
4.  I run on the treadmill.
5.  I am trying my best to lose weight.

I looked the list over for a few minutes and then BAM, it hit me right between the eyes.  It was right there all along, even for the many years I have been a trainer, and I never put 2 + 2 together.

   She had given me the reason for not getting results, plain and simple.

   She was trying to put a puzzle together without all the pieces.  She had a gym membership and was going to the gym regularly to workout.  She stayed away from fast foods and highly processed foods and ate healthy.  She knew how to use a few of the machines in the gym and utilized them when she went to the gym.  She did her aerobic conditioning regularly to strengthen her heart and lungs.  And most of all she had great intentions and the motivation to get it done.

   Everything seemed to be falling into place for her, but she was not getting results for 1 simple reason:  She did not know how to design an effective exercise program.
